SUMMARY:The Semiotics of Unity: nesting identities in a factional age
DESCRIPTION:La semiótica de la unidad: identidades anidadas en una era faccionalista\nAbout this session\nIn our current political climate\, we are surrounded by symbols of individuation: BLM flags\, rainbow pins\, Resist t-shirts\, and MAGA hats. These icons are profound tools for resistance and belonging\, but they are designed to signal who we are apart from the rest. This paper explores the value of developing a visual language that represents “the whole” while honoring the individual parts of a fractured system. Using the historical precedent of the Tudor Rose—a symbol that nested the warring red Lancastrian and white Yorkist roses rather than blending them into a diluted pink—I argue that our modern failure to find common ground is\, in part\, a failure of imagination. When we demand one dominant symbol or search for a “purple” compromise\, do we fail to make possible a vision of a “nested” future in which factional identities remain visible and respected within a shared framework? This workshop invites students to unpack symbols of identity (caveat: exclusive of symbols of hate or bigotry) to learn how they might visually combine them in ways that signal individuality within a collective whole. \nSession type: Design Your Own (DYO) session \nPresenters\n\nJennifer Rittner\, Assistant Professor\, Strategic Design & Management\, Parsons\n\nTime listed is Dominican Republic time.

SUMMARY:Foundation Studies as Virtual Multiplayer Studio
DESCRIPTION:Los estudios de fundamentos como taller virtual multijugador\n\nAbout this session\nWhat does it mean to build a studio community when students don’t share a physical space? This session presents a fully asynchronous\, remote foundations course that uses Figma as a unique studio environment — enabling dozens of students to work together in shared files that offer a sense of presence and collective making.  \nThe course centers each week on a Case Study: an artist or designer selected by peer faculty and introduced through interviews and conversations that distribute authorship and avoid a single arbiter of taste. Classic 2D design exercises are updated for digital contexts\, alongside novel Figma uses like annotated reading discussions\, narrative animations\, and nonlinear research presentations.  \nThe course takes a postmodern approach to the canon: deconstructing the hierarchies of craftwork\, interrogating cultural appropriation\, and foregrounding underrepresented voices across digital art and design history. By emphasizing the subjective nature of taste\, students are invited to locate themselves within a diverse and contested field. I’ll share my experience developing and teaching the course\, and offer practical tips for managing shared Figma workspaces at scale. \nSession type: Case Study \nPresenters\n\nBenjamin Andrew\, Associate Teaching Professor\, Penn State University\n\nTime listed is Dominican Republic time.

SUMMARY:Access\, Creative Practice & Community Care
DESCRIPTION:Acceso\, práctica creativa y cuidado comunitario\n\nAbout this session\nGatekeeping is often built into structures of artistic opportunity. Even when there is a stated intention to expand access for people of color or low-income artists\, opportunities such as artist residencies are often rendered inaccessible through requirements of nominations\, fees\, or portfolios\, which all assume access to time\, resources\, industry connections and cultural capital. In this session\, four individuals from two partnering organizations will discuss a unique partnership between an access program situated within a US-based art & design college and a Mexico-based organization that supports the exchange of knowledge & ideas across disciplines\, cultures & geographies through residencies\, educational initiatives\, and public programs. The core of their conversation will be about their program-specific residency which aims to remove such barriers and is driven by the following questions: How might the access program’s community-based learning extend beyond graduation? What might these two communities learn from each other through their shared interest in decolonized arts practices? And what might the cultivation of meaningful relationship building across these two communities lead to? Finally\, participants will be invited to reflect on the communities they belong to and the opportunities for increased access within their reach. \nSession type: Design Your Own (Session) \nPresenters\n\nNadia Williams + Pocoapoco\, Associate Professor\, School of Design Strategies\, Parsons\n\nTime listed is Dominican Republic time.

SUMMARY:La Pedagogía De La Mirada Lenta: enseñar atención en primer año
DESCRIPTION:The Pedagogy of Slow Looking: Teaching Attention in the First Year\nAbout this session\nEn contextos contemporáneos marcados por la aceleración de la experiencia visual y la fragmentación de la atención\, los estudiantes tienen cada vez más dificultades para sostener la atención visual en entornos visuales acelerados\, lo que afecta directamente los procesos de observación en el estudio. This presentation proposes “slow looking” as a transferable pedagogical methodology for strengthening perceptual attention in first-year students within art and design education. Drawing on practices derived from drawing and painting\, three classroom-applicable strategies are presented: observation prior to production\, description before representation\, and perceptual-restriction exercises focused on value\, color\, or line continuity. These strategies reorganize the relationship between perception\, language\, and action within studio learning. The proposal engages in dialogue with approaches that understand perception as embodied experience and learning as an active process\, particularly relevant in contemporary educational environments shaped by accelerated visual rhythms. Rather than a return to traditional models\, slow looking is presented as a contemporary pedagogical tool for reconfiguring attention as a foundational condition for learning in art and design across different international educational contexts. \nSession type: Ponencia académica (Paper) \nPresenters\n\n  Paula Saneaux\, Artista Independiente (Independent Artist)\, \n\nTime listed is Dominican Republic time.

SUMMARY:Feminist Design Archive: community-generated knowledge sharing + mini add-a-thon
DESCRIPTION:Archivo de Diseño Feminista: intercambio de conocimiento generado por la comunidad + mini add-a-thon\nAbout this session\nLaunched in 2024\, the Feminist Design Archive is an open-source\, community-generated digital archive that aims to document\, preserve and illuminate the work of feminist designers around the globe. Anyone can submit work to the archive in any format\, from any time period\, including their own work or the work of others. The archive encourages connection\, critical reflection\, and ongoing dialogue about how feminism is practiced through design today. This case study will describe the process of developing the archive\, the ways in which the archive reimagines traditional knowledge structures in design\, and the long-term objectives of the project. A mini-case study will also be presented that demonstrates ways in which online design archives can serve as catalysts for classroom assignments and projects\, and allow students to participate in knowledge-generation as well. Through dialogue with participants\, we will explore the digital archive as a collage of pluralistic\, overlapping\, conflicting\, and evolving ways of knowing and doing feminism through design.

SUMMARY:Co-Imagining Dignity Through Making Across Continents
DESCRIPTION:Co-imaginar la dignidad a través del hacer entre continentes\n\nAbout this session\nThis workshop explores how dignity can be expressed in design through maximalism and minimalism\, not as a fixed concept\, but as something interpreted\, constructed\, and made tangible through form. Working in pairs\, participants will create abstract typographic compositions that examine how visual decisions communicate presence\, respect\, and value. Each pair produces two responses: one through accumulation\, density\, and layering\, and the other through reduction\, restraint\, and clarity. The focus is not on stylistic outcomes\, but on how elements such as space\, hierarchy\, tension\, repetition\, and composition generate meaning and inform the human experience of design. Through this process\, participants begin to understand dignity as embedded in design choices rather than ornamental representation. Grounded in the core values of the South Asian Design Educators Alliance (SADEA)\, particularly dignity and plurality\, the workshop centers on collective making and engages multiple modes of perception. It recognizes South Asian design as diverse and evolving\, formed by a plurality of voices and perspectives. \nSession type: Design Your Own (DYO) Session \nPresenters\n\nArchana Shekara & Amrita Datta Haughn\, Professor of Graphic Design\, Illinois State University\n\nTime listed is Dominican Republic time.
